Three years ago, I had just finished a major consulting assignment. Everything was set in place.
My LinkedIn? Polished. My Resume? Sparkled. My Referrals? Excellent.
BUT for around three months straight, every job application I sent out was met with deafening silence. I was qualified and had all the experience, yet there wasn’t even a peep of rejection. It was just complete radio silence. So, of course, I was beyond frustrated. I was confused.
Then, a good friend and mentor slipped some valuable advice on one of our usual meet-ups, and what he said changed everything. He said, “Ron, your reputation got you here. But it’s your personal brand that will get you seen.”
Boy oh boy, I’ll be damned if I said I didn’t understand the difference between reputation and personal brand. Like, what’s the difference, and why does it even matter?
But once I did learn the difference between the two, my world shifted ever so slightly.
So, what IS the difference between reputation and personal brand?
And why does it matter so much for your career and/or business growth?
I’ve compiled 5 hard truths that are pivotal to your career’s growth. Let’s break it down and understand it together.
Remember that your reputation is built over time through your behavior, work ethic, and consistency. But your personal brand is what you intentionally communicate, be it offline, online, visually, and/or verbally.
Try Imagining This:
For example, “She consistently delivers high-quality work and is a reliable team player.”
You can do all the great work and still be invisible if you don’t set your narrative straight.
A founder I met at a networking event once told me, “I thought my product would speak for itself, but I realized that I needed to speak for it first.”
Your personal brand is the platform you build and grow; it’s a tool you use to communicate your value before entering the room. It allows you to own your story, leaving no room for doubt.
Here’s the fallacy hiding beneath the truth: “I’ll build my brand once I achieve something big.”
Wrong!
You build a personal brand as you grow. Not after.
Likewise, your personal brand opens the kind of doors that your reputation alone can’t knock on yet.
Your reputation is a reflection of what you’ve done, accomplished, and achieved. Whereas your personal brand is a reflection of what you want to be known for.
Then you need to know that a strong personal brand aligns with where you’re headed—not just where you’ve been.
For Example: An engineer transitioning into product management shouldn’t talk about coding. Rather, they should start sharing insights on user-centric thinking, team leadership, and product-market fit.
While both are essential for your career growth, they are still different.
Have you come across a silent recruiter scouting LinkedIn? That investor clicking on your portfolio? Or that podcaster looking for a suitable guest? They don’t know your reputation. But they see your brand. And they make their decisions based on it.
The Takeaway:
Your REPUTATION is what the world remembers.
Your PERSONAL BRAND is what the world notices.
So, start today. How, you might ask?
Because in today’s highly competitive world, it’s not just about being good at what you do; it’s also about being known for it.
